Xtreme Toyota Part III
Making Some Sweet Music With The New Headers and Exhaust!!
By Ryan Smith
Date Started: October 2003

Definitely ahead of its time in design when it was built a few years ago we have some HUGE improvements to make to this Tacoma this month!

Just to give a brief history on the exhaust:

The stock Toyota exhaust system is an exercise in the standard CHEAP and silent methods by which manufactures use to appease California's emiisions board. The first thig done was to chop the whole system off right from the catalytic converter. Once this simple task was taken care of 2" piping routed the flames (or fumes) to a Flowmaster. Shortly thereafter the 3" pipe is then dumped right after the axle. What a difference! The Seat-O-ThePants meter showed quite a difference in both acceleration and tire smoking. But alas, time has taken it's toll on the aluminized Flowmaster muffler and new and improved plans are in store for the exhaust system.

The plan is as follows:

  1. It must sound good
  2. Headers are a must
  3. The muffler needs to be stainless to add some *bling* and last forever
  4. The welds must be perfect and the bends must be as well so it won't rattle against anything.
  5. It must sound good

As restrictive as it is Toyota really didn't do a bad job on the stock exhaust manifold. This is the reason a header hasn't been installed yet. I chose to really do my research and wait for a quaity product to be released that also conformed to CA emissions standards as well. Enter the L.C. Engineering 4 into 1 header. What a piece of art! The construction of the header is second to none with the mandrel bent stainless steel tubing! On top of this they include a FACTORY exhaust gasket, a FACTORY donut gasket, two O2 sensor gaskets and a handful of new nuts and bolts for the O2 sensors and to attach the header itself to the engine. Besides coming with hardware the header package includes the famous CARB sticker! This header will not dissapoint. Click to read on...
